The American television drama series The Rockford Files aired on NBC television network from the 13th of September to the 10th of January 1980. The series revolves around the show primary character Jim Rockford a private detective based in Los Angeles and played by James Garner. The script and film was created by Stephen J.Cannell and Roy Huggins, an influential American Novelist who is also credited for creating other popular shows such as maverick which aired from 1957 to 1962 of which James Garner also starred as the lead character; and the fugitive in his hay days; Stephen J. Cannell is credited for writing the TV series Chase which also aired on NBC television network from 1973 to 1974; the pair collaborated to create one of the television networks best performing TV series.

The producers of the show, Cannell and Huggins, created the lead character Rockford in a way thought brought a fresh tone to what audiences of the time perceived in most detective based drama series. It is this divergence from what was considered the norm that led to the shows popularity.

The story follows Jim Rockfords life after wrongful conviction of a crime (armed robbery) in which he served five years in San Quentin prison in California. Affectionately dubbed Jimbo or Jimmy for short, Jim Rockford attempts to maintain a home and meet his living expenses through private investigator jobs. In the show Jim Rockford lives in a mobile, and decaying home parked in a Californian parking lot and which also acts as his office.

Every episode begins with a phone call to Jim Rockfords office which is answered by an answering machine and often has a potential client offering an excuse not to pay Rockfords asking rate of 200$ a day for a case; which at the time was considered rather steep for a private detective in the 70s.

In the early episodes of the TV show, Rockfords home is situated in a parking lot just by the highway and ocean but in subsequent episodes it is moved adjacent to a restaurant and pier at paradise cove.
